French hoods were worn in the second half of the 15th century, the late Tudor and early Elizabethan period. This French Hood is black silver Florentine patterned velvet with antique silver trim and a black chiffon veil.   These have wire in them to achieve the desired shape and an adjustable elastic band that goes behind the head under the hair.
